1st February 2012
At the heart of the Women's Leadership Initiative is a leadership development programme specially designed for women who are already senior executives working in the public sector and who are keen to develop their leadership potential and take their careers further.
The 10th, 2012-13 programme will start on the 18 April 2012. Nominations are now closed. Applicants will be a notified about placements before the end of February.
THE 2012-13 PROGRAMME
Every year for past 10 years applications supported by chief executives, have been sought from women who aspire to the most senior positions the public service has to offer and who welcome the challenge of leading within complex organisations. They have been women prepared to 'think outside the box' and to participate actively in and contribute to a challenging and very different type of programme.
The 10th programme, the 2012/13 programme begins with a 3-day residential module at the Burrendale Hotel in Newcastle, Co. Down. There are four residential models, which are held in Northern Ireland, in London and in Dublin between April and January. There is also a Theme day and three group-managed learning sets which also take place within the span of the programme.
Chief executives are now invited to make their nominations to the programme. Women senior managers - those holding second or third tier posts; that is those reporting directly their chief executive or to a director-level executive - who apply and are nominated will be asked to complete a form that is designed to encourage them to think about their careers, their development needs and the benefits they expect to gain from the programme. They will be women who are already senior managers working in the civil or wider public service in Northern Ireland; those who want to further their careers and feel they need to develop their leadership skills.
This is not a chalk-and-talk training course. Learning comes from participation in a group dynamic that integrates very different perspectives and experiences both within the group and from guest contributors. The programme values intellect, imagination and emotion. If this programme is for you, you will be someone who is prepared to be open and an active participant in a group setting. To get the most out of the programme, you must be prepared to take risks...

THE 2011-12 PROGRAMME
The current programme like the previous programme was oversubscribed and, regrettably as is often the case, we could not take all those very competent women managers who applied. As always those chosen to form the ninth group were broadly representative of the public sector here:
The women on the programme have a wide range of experiences and represent a variety of professional backgrounds such as in finance and business planning, corporate services and governance, human resources and equality matters, performance improvement, information and communications services, health, environmental services and cultural development, policing, judicial and other functions. All feel the need to hone their leadership skills as they look forward to furthering their careers.
