WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE
At the heart of the Women's Leadership Initiative is a leadership development programme specially designed for women who are already senior executives working in the public sector and who are keen to develop their leadership potential and take their careers further.

The eighth programme is now underway
The 2009-10 programme
The eighth, the second programme to get underway this year started on Wednesday 9 October 2009 when the first 3-day module of the programme was once again held in Newcastle, Co. Down, at the Burrendale Hotel & Country Club. It is a full programme with the 20 places being fully taken up. In fact the programme was again over subscribed and the selection panel had some difficult choices to make to ensure the right balance of organisations, functions and professional groupings represented As always the group is a widely representative cross-section of more senior women public sector managers. The organisations represented on the current programme are:
- Armagh City and District Council
- Ballymena Borough Council
- Belfast City Council
- Belfast Health and Social Care Trust
- C2K (Classroom 2000)
- Consumer Council for Northern Ireland
- Department for Employment and Learning
- Department for Regional Development
- Down District Council
- Equality Commission for Northern Ireland
- Labour Relations Agency
- Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland
- Northern Health and Social Care Trust
- Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister
- Police Service of Northern Ireland
- Probation Board for Northern Ireland
- Social Security Agency
- South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust
- Southern Health and Social Care Trust
- Western Health and Social Care Trust
It is, as you might expect, a rich group of talented women with a wide range of experiences and professional backgrounds: in finance and business planning, corporate services and governance, human resources and equality matters, performance improvement, regional development, community support and regeneration, information and communications services, European interests, curricular services, cardiology and psychology services, environmental health - a rich set of talents indeed!
The next module will be in January and in London. This will include a visit to the House of Lords kindly arranged by Rabbi Baroness Julia Neuberger DBE, and again in May when we are off to Dublin for the third module. The last module will be in September and in between, in June, we have our theme day visit to the Northern Ireland Assembly at Parliament Buildings, Stormont. There will be more about plans for the London and Dublin modules in future blogs.
The next programme...
The further programme, which would be the ninth is being considered. Again, we will be looking for 20 or so talented individuals: women who or second or third tier executives working in the civil or wider public service, who are at a crossroads in their careers and feel they need to have their leadership skills developed. Typically applications, supported by chief executives, would be sought from women who aspire to the most senior positions the public service has to offer and who welcome the challenge of leading change within complex organisations. They need to be prepared to 'think outside the box', be prepared to participate actively in and contribute to a challenging programme that is very different.
As always in choosing people to participate in the programme we will aim for a group that will be broadly representative of the public sector at large.
If you would like to have a quick chat about the programme and whether you feel it's right for you at this stage in your career then, again, let Kim McKnight (contact details below) know and she will make arrangements for us to talk over the phone.
